Uplift was along several faults which tilted the Fountain Formation rock layers downward and eastward, leaving today’s 50-degree-angled Flatirons. The Fountain sandstone found at Garden of the Gods and Roxborough State Park is soft and easily eroded, but at the Flatirons the rock grains are cemented together by adularia, forming the erosion-resistant formations.
The stone was originally deposited by rivers and creeks on the eastern edge of a mountain range called the Ancestral Rockies about 300 million years ago.
The Flatirons are composed of sandstone and conglomerate in the Fountain Formation, a 1,000-foot-thick rock unit along Colorado’s Front Range between Cañon City and Fort Collins. Horse RegulationsĮquestrians are allowed on all trails in the Flatirons Vista area. A dog station is available to aid in the collection of dog excrement.ĭogs must be leashed seasonally on the upper section of the Doudy Draw Trail south of Community Ditch Trail and west of the Flatirons Vista Trailhead because of black bear activity. Dog excrement removal is required by law. Dogs must be on a hand-held leash at all times unless they meet the voice and sight control standard and display a City of Boulder Voice and Sight tag. Bicycles may be ridden only on those trails that are posted with the international bicycle symbol. Bike Regulationsīicycles are allowed on most trails in the area.
